For the entirety of my Magic-playing career, I had to content myself with stories from older players about the halcyon days of massive stacks of countermagic in Psychatog mirrors, Fact or Fiction as the unbeatable bait spell in combo decks, and how it (alongside Flametongue Kavu) defined a generation of value-oriented Magic
For example, if a 5/5 creature that's also a planeswalker with three loyalty counters on it is dealt 4 damage, it's been dealt 1 excess damage and Aegar's ability may trigger
A 2/4 flier for three mana is great, and on top of that, it can facilitate a lot of lifegain in your angel or cleric tribal decks
Maybe a card idea gets filed and sticks forever, maybe it gets tweaked in playtesting, or maybe it gets cut completely. In the final Play Design Stage, a separate Wizards of the Coast team with a background in competitive Magic vets the nearly complete set for its competitive elements, sending back proposed changes to fix any balance issues
